Description

Hearty crockpot split pea soup with ham bone is a traditional slow cooker comfort recipe made with tender split peas, smoky ham, vegetables, herbs, and rich broth.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound dried split peas, rinsed and sorted
  • 1 meaty ham bone
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 6 to 7 cups chicken broth or water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
  • Optional: pinch of smoked paprika

Instructions

1. Rinse split peas under cold water and remove debris.

2. Add split peas to the crockpot.

3. Place ham bone on top of the peas.

4. Add onion, carrots, celery, and garlic.

5. Pour in broth or water until ingredients stay fully covered.

6. Add salt, pepper, thyme, bay leaf, and olive oil or butter.

7. Cover and cook on low for 7 to 8 hours.

8. Remove ham bone and let it cool slightly.

9. Pull off remaining ham meat and return it to the soup.

10. Discard bone and bay leaf.

11. Stir soup well and mash or blend part of it for a smoother texture.

12. Taste, adjust seasoning, and serve hot.

Notes

  • Add extra broth near the end for a thinner soup.
  • Add potatoes or leeks for more texture.
  • Add lemon juice or vinegar before serving for brightness.
  • Leftovers thicken as they cool, so add broth when reheating.
  • Store refrigerated for several days or freeze for later.
