Description

French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes combine savory ground beef, deeply caramelized onions, and melted Gruyรจre cheese on a toasted bun. This hearty comfort food sandwich delivers rich, cozy flavor in every bite and makes an easy weeknight dinner or satisfying lunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyรจre or Swiss cheese
  • 4 sturdy sandwich buns or brioche buns
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for toasting buns)
  • Extra cheese for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Melt butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced onions with a pinch of salt and cook 20โ€“25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply golden and caramelized.
  3. Stir in garlic and thyme and cook 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Push onions to one side and add ground beef. Cook 6โ€“8 minutes, breaking apart, until browned. Drain excess grease if needed.
  5. Mix onions and beef together. Sprinkle flour over mixture and stir well.
  6. Slowly pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring continuously.
  7. Simmer 5โ€“7 minutes until thickened and saucy. Season with salt and pepper.
  8. Reduce heat to low and stir in shredded cheese until melted and incorporated.
  9. Butter and toast buns in a separate pan until golden brown.
  10. Spoon beef mixture onto bottom buns. Add extra cheese if desired.
  11. Broil 1โ€“2 minutes until cheese is bubbly (optional).
  12. Top with remaining bun halves and serve warm.

Notes

  • Deglaze pan with a splash of white wine before adding broth for deeper flavor.
  • Ground turkey can replace beef for a lighter option.
  • Gruyรจre offers authentic flavor, but Swiss or provolone work well.
  • Store filling separately in refrigerator up to 3 days and reheat gently.
