Description
Slow-cooked cabbage with bacon, onion, and garlic in a rich broth makes this crockpot cabbage recipe a warm, comforting side or main dish.

- 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
- 2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 Tablespoon light brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 small cabbage head, sliced into 1-inch ribbons
- 6 slices of bacon, chopped
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 Tablespoon unsalted butter
Instructions
- Mix together broth, vinegar, brown sugar, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes in a bowl.
- Layer cabbage in a 6-quart slow cooker.
- In a skillet, cook chopped bacon until crisp. Add onion and sauté until translucent. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant.
- Add the bacon-onion-garlic mixture to the cabbage.
- Pour broth mixture over the top. Dot with butter.
- Cover and cook on HIGH for 3 hours or LOW for 4–6 hours. Stir halfway through.
Notes
You can substitute maple syrup for brown sugar.
Add smoked paprika or mustard for more depth.
Use vegetable broth and skip bacon for a vegetarian version.
